Why This Facebook Class is Important
In honor of National Breastfeeding Month we would like to invite you to our Breastfeeding 101 Facebook Class.
Breast milk is a nutritious balance of the water, proteins, vitamins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, enzymes, and antibodies that your baby needs to grow and develop. Incredibly, it is your baby’s instinct to want to feed from this wealth of nutrients.
Not only does your breast milk provide nutrients to your developing baby, it remains in a constant state of change in its composition throughout the lactation process to adapt to the changing needs of your growing child.
For instance, up until 6 months, a baby’s digestive system is not fully developed, and breast milk provides the necessary enzymes (amylase and lipase) that aid in the breaking down of proteins and digestion.
Additionally, babies are born with very sensitive immune systems (which means that they are highly susceptible to getting sick or developing infections) but breastfeeding passes along immunities to the baby with each feeding, as between 40% to 80% of the cells in breast milk are macrophages, bacteria, fungi, and virus killing cells which makes breast milk an immunological, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory powerhouse when it comes to protecting your baby. For this reason, breastfed babies experience lower rates of respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses, as well as urinary tract problems and ear infections.
Knowing the amazing benefits of providing breast milk to your child should make breastfeeding your first choice if given the option, as it is your baby’s first line of defense as they develop and grow.
